Probate

The death of a relative is an extremely difficult time for a family. Coping with such a loss is difficult enough without the administrative burden of informing interested parties and dealing with the deceased's estate.

If a close relative has died and if they left assets in their own name of more than 5000, you will need to obtain a grant of Probate (if they left a will) or a grant of Letters of Administration (if they didn't). Without a grant, you won't be able to deal with their estate.

Harriet Hawkins can help you deal with these problems at a time when you are probably too upset to want to face them. She can then help you deal with the estate, manage the paperwork and pay out to the beneficiaries.

Trusts

You may want to set up a trust in your lifetime or through your will to e.g. minimize tax, deal with family problems etc.

Making a Trust, either during your life time or in your Will (to take effect after your death) can be an invaluable tool in ensuring your family money stays just there - in the family. It is particularly important for saving Inheritance Tax, and also ensures that you retain an element of control over Trust funds during your lifetime.

If you would like to talk to someone about the process and benefits of preparing a Trust, please contact Harriet at our Mansfield office on 01623 460444.

Wills

Making a will won't kill you!

Everyone should make one to ensure that those closest to them to receive exactly what you wish them to receive and should then review it every 5 or 10 years to make sure it does not need alteration, because your circumstances change and so do the tax laws.

A straightforward will is not as expensive as some imagine and provides you with the piece of mind that come from having your affairs covered in a valid legal document.

Harriet Hawkins can advise you on this for a modest cost. A straightforward will for a couple will cost 100 + vat (though more complicated wills may be more expensive). We are also happy to arrange home visits for those clients who are unable to attend the office.
